Geological phenomene of Katavothres

This prodigy of nature is located two kilometres away from town of Sami. Nature here has done wonders and created a magnificent lake in an underground cave adorned with stalactites and stalagmites which are nearly 20,000 years-old. The cave ceiling collapsed following an earthquake, and sun beams penetrating the water through the opening light it up in a captivating display of shades of blue. A unique cave formed deep underground 150 million years ago. The visitors descend to a depth of 44 meters and stand transfixed by the opening vista of red and crystalline stalactites and stalagmites. At a depth of 95 meters the cave has a unique underground hall with excellent acoustics.
Mountain Ainos
This is the highest mountain of the Ionian Islands (1,628 meters). It has been a National Nature Reserve since 1962. It is home to a unique black fir tree. Up to a height of 1,300 meters above sea level you can also see herds of wild horses running free on mountainous cliffs.
Fortress of Assos
The castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The total length of its walls is 2,000 meters.Visitors coming in through the vaulted gate seem to travel back in time to the epoch when the castle residents tried to protect their homes and property from pirate raids.
Saint George Castle
Built by the Venetians in the shape of a polygon, it sprawls over an area of 1,600 sq. m. Prior to 1757 it housed the first capital of the island. The castle walls encompassed a number of state offices and private houses.
Micenean domed shrine Tzanata
In the vicinity of the town of Poros, archaeologists unearthed a domed sepulchre of Mycenaean period (1400 - 1000 BC). With a diameter of 7 meters, the tomb is in a very good state and believed to be one of the largest monuments of this type in north-western Greece.
Micenean mine entombments of Mazarakata
The Mazarakata area was discovered to have a necropolis of 16 mine entombments of Mycenaean period. All the finds were entrusted to the archaeological museum of the town of Argostoli. This archaeological monument showcases the importance of the island of Cephalonia as a cultural centre at that time.
Roman mosaic in the town of Skala
Archaeological excavations near the town of Skala (south-eastern promontory) revealed ruins of a Roman villa with superb mosaics in good condition.
