Kefalonia : an endless church museum
Monastery of Agios Gerasimos
Agios (Saint) Gerasimos, the patron of the island, lived here. This is also the place where his relics are kept in a reliquary following his death. People from all over the world come to genuflect and say a prayer at the silver casket with his relics, kept at the monastery church.
Convent of Agios Andreas
The first buildings of the Convent date back to 1587. Today it houses a fine church museum where the preserved foot of the Saint is kept.
Monastery of Panagia Theotokos of Kipouria
The monastery Kipouraion is built like an aerie on the very edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. A magnificent view opening from the monastery, peace and grandeur, mesmerize each visitor.
Monastery of Panagia Atrou
Built on Atros mountain, this monastery is the oldest one on the island.
Church of Pangia Lagouvarda in Markopoulos
This is the venue of one of the biggest celebrations on the island, held every 15 August. Starting on 6 August, the monastery's belfry begins to be surrounded by small harmless snakes with a pattern resembling a black cross painted on their heads. The villagers put them in glass jars next to the wonder-working icon of Virgin Mary and many believers come to offer a prayer and witness the miracle.
